WHAT LAWS DO I HAVE TO OBEY AS A BICYCLIST?

In Mississippi, bicyclists are expected to follow the same rules and regulations as if they were driving a car. Section 63-3-207 of the Mississippi Code states:

Every person riding a bicycle or an animal or driving any animal drawing a vehicle upon a highway shall have all of the rights and all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle under this chapter, except those provisions of this chapter which by their nature can have no application.

This is an old law that has been in effect since 1938, and in at least two cases since then bicyclists have lost at trial because it was found that they violated the rules of the road. As soon as you take a bicycle onto public roads in Mississippi, you have all of the rights of anyone else, but you also have all of the duties.
