SHOULD I REPORT THE ACCIDENT TO MY OWN INSURANCE COMPANY?
Yes, you should. There is probably a provision in your policy that requires you to promptly report any auto accident. Your insurance company will want to conduct its own investigation whether the accident was your fault or not.
In almost every case, your own insurance company will want to take a “recorded statement” from you concerning the accident. It is our suggestion that if there were injuries in the accident, or you have concerns that the insurance company might try to deny you coverage, you should contact an attorney before agreeing to a statement. But be advised that you should cooperate promptly with your insurance company to avoid the company claiming that you are not cooperating with them, and denying you coverage for your accident. If you have any questions do not hesitate to call us.
Incidentally, you should NEVER give a statement to the other driver’s insurance company without the assistance of an attorney.
